EPA AND DEP TO ANNOUNCE MAJOR WATERSHED GRANT IN WALLINGFORD DURING QUINNIPIAC TOUR

BOSTON - John P. DeVillars, EPA's New England Administrator, and Arthur J. Rocque Jr., commissioner of the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection will announce a major grant being given for watershed protection on Wednesday, Oct. 13.

DeVillars and Rocque will make the announcement during a lunch at Community Lake Park in Wallingford being held to launch the first section of the Quinnipiac River Linear Trail.

Media are invited to attend the following events with DeVillars, who will spend the day touring the Quinnipiac River basin:

    • 10:15-11:15 am: Harbor Brook flood control plan, Meriden. Phil Ashton, chair of Meriden's Flood Control Commission, will present the town's Harbor Brook flood control plan. (Meet at the recreation pavilion next to the brook at the "Harbor Towers" apartment complex on Hanover Street).
    • 11:30 am-1 pm: Linear Trail Groundbreaking Ceremony and luncheon, Wallingford. Rep. Mushinsky, DeVillars, Rocque, town officials, local environmental activists and members of the Quinnipiac River Watershed Partnership will be at ceremony for Quinnipiac River Linear Trail. Participants will be invited to tour the trail and take canoe rides on the river. (Meet at Community Lake Park, off Exit 65 off the Wilbur Cross Parkway).
    • 1:15-3 pm: Quinnipiac River salt marsh tour, North Haven. Nancy Rosenbaum, chair of the Quinnipiac Partnership's salt marsh work group, and local experts will lead tour of salt marsh area for DeVillars and Rocque, culminating in a trip to the top of the North Haven landfill for a bird's eye view of the marsh. (Meet at "park and ride" lot on east side of State Street, off Exit 10 off I-91).
    • 3:15 to 4 pm: Pharmacia & Upjohn Co. in North Haven. EPA and Upjohn site managers will conduct tour of hazardous waste clean up project. (Meet in parking lot at main entrance at 41 Stiles Lane).
