Governor Granholm, Senator Stabenow to accompany Administrator

Marshall, Mich. – U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lisa P. Jackson will travel to Michigan today, July 30, to oversee the ongoing response to the Enbridge oil spill in the Kalamazoo River.

Administrator Jackson will join Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm and Senator Debbie Stabenow at a briefing at the Unified Area Command in Marshall and an overflight of portions of the Kalamazoo River impacted by the spill. The Administrator, Governor and Senator will hold a press briefing at 6:30pm ET.

On Monday, July 26, Enbridge Inc. reported that a 30-inch pipeline belonging to the company burst in Marshall, Michigan, leaking an estimated one million gallons of crude oil into Talmadge Creek, a waterway that feeds the Kalamazoo River. While the oil leak has stopped, the spill has affected up to 25 miles of the Kalamazoo River. The spill site, located between Marshall and Battle Creek, includes marshlands, residential areas, farmland and businesses.

EPA, which has assumed the role of Federal On-Scene Coordinator for this spill, was on the ground immediately following the spill and rapidly ramped up its response.
