(Anchorage, AK. – April 20, 2006) EPA Administrator Steve Johnson and former EPA Administrator William D. Ruckelshaus presented Alaska Youth for Environmental Action with the President’s Environmental Youth Award for their “Climate Stewards Project,” in a Washington, D.C. ceremony today.

The Alaska Youth for Environmental Action (AYEA), sponsored by the National Wildlife Federation, embarked on a statewide outreach and educational campaign to raise awareness about the impact of global warming in Alaska. High school students in AYEA organized a series of individual projects including a summer training session, a traveling PowerPoint presentation, a state-wide petition signed by 5,000 teens requesting national action on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and investment in renewable energy, and worked with local elected officials and the state legislature to take action on global warming.

In one year, the AYEA teens reached five times more young people than had been engaged in the entire program’s history.

The President’s Environmental Youth Awards program is aimed at encouraging individuals, school classes, summer camps, public interest groups, and youth organizations to promote environmental awareness and positive community involvement. Each year, young people from around the country, kindergarten through high school, are invited to participate in the awards program as individuals or in groups. The program has two components: the regional certificate program and the national awards competition. Regional certificates from the President of the United States are awarded by each of the ten EPA regions. Additionally, one outstanding project from each region is presented with a Presidential plaque at an EPA sponsored award ceremony.
