FOR RELEASE: FRIDAY, MAY 1, 1998
SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT CHALLENGE GRANTS
TO BE AWARDED FOR 45 PROJECTS

To promote synchronous environmental, economic and enhancement progress in communities, 45 awards will be made under the Sustainable Development Challenge Grants program following submission and approval of final proposals from the 45 grantees. The grantees were selected from 962 applications. The grants, totaling $5m (FY 97 funding), are called challenge grants because they are expected to provide leveraging for other public funding and private funding in the communities. The grants also are intended to encourage community-based projects that integrate environmental protection and community and economic partnerships. The Agency recognizes that environmental progress will not be achieved solely by regulation, that there also is the need for individual, institutional, and corporate responsibility, commitment and stewardship. Sustainable development meets the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their need. The Sustainable Development Challenge Grant program strongly encourages partnering among community, business and government entitities to cooperatively develop flexible, locally-oriented approaches aimed at sustainable development and revitalization.
