FOR RELEASE: FRIDAY, JANUARY 10, 1997

EPA AWARDS 109 GRADUATE FELLOWSHIPS UNDER "SCIENCE TO ACHIEVE RESULTS" PROGRAM

Graduate fellowships for 109 students working at a masters or doctoral level in environmentally-related fields of study have been awarded by EPA through its "Science to Achieve Results" or STAR program. The fellowships were awarded to students pursuing graduate degrees in a broad range of academic disciplines relating to environmental science including ecology, geology, earth sciences, chemical and environmental engineering and economics, among others, at 55 academic institutions in 30 states. Under the program the graduate fellows will receive a $17,000 stipend, $5,000 in expense money and up to $12,000 for tuition and academic fees. Masters level students are eligible for two years and doctoral level students for up to three years support. Finalists were selected from a pool of over 900 applicants on the basis of merit evaluations, program goals and the availability of funds. This is the second year EPA has awarded graduate fellowships under its STAR program. For more information on the fellowship program, call the National Center for Environmental Research and Quality Assurance Help Line at 1-800-490-9194. STAR fellowship information is also available electronically at https://www.epa.gov/ncerqa.
