City of New Underwood (SD) recognized for drinking water infrastructure

Recovery Act funds investments in new drinking water system

(Denver, Colo. – July 13, 2011) The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency today presented an award to the City of New Underwood, SD, for its Water Remediation Technology package treatment system. Brian Friel, coordinator of EPA’s state revolving fund program in Denver, presented the award to Mayor Jack Trullinger.

In 2009, the City of New Underwood received a loan of $175,000 from the South Dakota Department of Environment and Natural Resources to bring a source well into compliance with safe drinking water standards. The project was needed to treat the water for radium and gross alpha contamination. This loan was partially funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and received some subsidy through principal forgiveness.

“Using this new system, drinking water quality will be safely improved and distribution will be made more reliable, representing a public health benefit to the people of New Underwood’, said Brian Friel.

With the passages of the Amendments to the Safe Drinking Water Act in 1996, the U.S. Congress made funds for water infrastructure improvements readily available. EPA’s state revolving fund program provides low-interest subsidized loans for drinking water projects. The program also emphasizes providing funds to small and disadvantaged communities. Nationally, DWSRFs have funded over $20 billion in drinking water projects.
