(New York, NY) The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has selected the final plans for actions that will result in cleaner and healther environments for the people who live and work near six Superfund sites in New Jersey. These plans are based on investigations of contamination at each site, a comprehensive review of possible cleanup approaches, and comments from residents and other affected stakeholders.

“Now that we have final plans to clean these sites up, we bring these communities one step closer to rectifying the legacy of contamination left behind at these sites,” said Regional Administrator Alan J. Steinberg. “As we continue to make progress at these sites, EPA will work closely with the affected communities to ensure that they are kept informed and given every opportunity to be involved in the cleanup process.””

Below is a list of the sites and cleanup plans:

Iceland Coin Laundry (Cumberland County) - The cleanup plan calls for injecting a biological additive into the ground water to break hazardous chemicals down into a form that is not harmful to people or the environment. This method will remove the threat from remaining volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the ground water.

Pohatcong Valley Groundwater Contamination (Warren County) - EPA will drill wells to pump out the contaminated water and treat it using technology that will strip out the pollutants by blowing air through the contaminated water to separate out the chemicals. The resulting clean water will be pumped back into the ground. This process will be repeated until the levels of contaminants are reduced to below standards set by the state of New Jersey.

Rockaway Borough Wellfield (Morris County) – EPA will remove soil in the Wall Street and East Main Street area of the site that is contaminated with tetrachloroethene (PCE), a commonly used industrial solvent, and move it to a location specially certified to treat and dispose of this kind of material.

U.S. Radium (Essex County) – EPA has determined that no further action is necessary to clean up this site. Ground water sampling at the site found no evidence of wide-spread ground water contamination.

Puchack Well Field (Camden County) – EPA will inject nontoxic chemicals into the ground water to decrease chromium levels to below New Jersey’s ground water standard and will continue to monitor the ground water over the lifetime of the remedy.

Monitor Devices / Intercircuits (Monmouth County) - EPA has determined that no further action is necessary to address the soils at this site. A separate cleanup plan is currently in effect to address the ground water contamination.
