EPA HONORS WASTEWISE PARTNERS


EPA will honor 28 WasteWise partners that have received significant waste prevention results in 1997 at an awards ceremony at 6:15 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 9 at the Omni Shoreham Hotel, 2500 Calvert St. N.W., Washington, D.C. In addition 200 new WasteWise partners will be recognized. EPA launched WasteWise in January 1994 as a voluntary partnership program that is designed to help businesses find practical methods for reducing municipal solid waste. The program was expanded in 1997 to include tribal, state and local government partners. Today there are a over 800 WasteWise partners from 50 industry sectors, governments and institutions. EPA is awarding eight WasteWise Partner of the Year awards to: BankAmerica Corp., Livermore, Calif.; Bell Atlantic, East Orange, N.J.; Target Stores, Minneapolis, Minn.; Public Service Electric and Gas Co., Newark, N.J.; Schlegel Systems, Inc., Rochester, N.Y. and Southern Mills, Inc., Senoia, Ga.; Applied Specialties, Inc., Avon Lake, Ohio; and Sligo Adventist School, Takoma Park, Md. Twenty WasteWise Program Champions include: Battelle Memorial Institute, Columbus, Ohio; Bethlehem Steel Corp., Bethlehem, Penn.; California State University, Sacramento, Calif.; CITGO Corp., Tulsa, Okla.; Crown Cork & Seal Company, Inc., Philadelphia, Penn.; Eastman Kodak Company, Rochester, N.Y.; Florida Power & Light, West Palm Beach, Fla.; GPU Energy, Reading, Penn.; Herman Miller, Inc., Zeeland, Mich.; Ingersoll-Rand Company, Woodcliff Lake, N.J.; McDonald’s Corp., Oak Brook, Ill.; Pitney Bowes Inc., Stamford, Conn.; Resource Strategies, Glendale, Arz.; Russell Corp., Alexander City, Alab.; Seattle University, Seattle, Wash.; Synthetic Industries, Inc., Chattanooga, Tenn.; The Clorox Co., Pleasanton, Calif.; The Lubrizol Corporation, Wickliffe, Ohio Headquarters, Painesville, Ohio; Virco Manufacturing Corp., Conway, Arz.; and Wilmot & Associates, Inc., Nashville, Tenn. More than 200 new partners include organizations from 38 industry sectors with federal, state, local and tribal governments comprising nearly 39 percent of the new membership and universities and schools making up 17 percent of the new WasteWise partners.
