EPA FINES YUMA AUTOMOTIVE CENTER $24,200 FOR HAZARDOUS WASTE VIOLATIONS

     SAN FRANCISCO   The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced that it has recently fined the Bill Alexander Automotive Center $24,200 for hazardous waste violations discovered at its automotive facility in Yuma, Ariz.

     EPA and Arizona Department of Environmental Quality investigators discovered the violations in October 2000 during a routine inspection of the facility, where flammable solvents are used in the repair and maintenance of used automobiles.  

     "This settlement results in a number of measures that make the facility safer for its workers and the surrounding community," said Jeff Scott, director of the U.S. EPA's Waste Management Division for the Pacific Southwest office.  "The EPA will continue to strictly enforce all regulations governing facilities who generate and manage hazardous waste."

     The EPA cited Alexander Automotive for violation's under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act program, which governs the storage, transportation, and disposal of hazardous waste in the state.

    Alexander Automotive was cited for the following violations:

     Storage of hazardous waste without a permit.

     Failure to minimize the possibility of a hazardous waste release.

     Failure to perform a hazardous waste determination.

     Failure to equip the hazardous waste storage area with required equipment and failure to make arrangements with local authorities.

     Failure to close containers of hazardous waste.

     Since being notified of the violations, the Bill Alexander Automotive Center has corrected all of the violations.
