FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(Kansas City, Kan., Dec. 17, 2008) - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is accepting applications for grants from the national Community Action for a Renewed Environment (CARE) program. Through March 16, 2009, EPA headquarters in Washington, D.C., will accept proposals to support community-based partnerships to reduce pollution at the local level.

CARE is a competitive grant program that offers an innovative way for communities to organize and take action to locally identify and reduce their air, land and water environmental concerns. About $3 million will be available for CARE grants in 2009.

The CARE program helps communities address their risks comprehensively through technical assistance and resources. As communities create local stakeholder groups that successfully reduce risks from numerous sources, CARE helps them build the long-term capacity to understand and address their environmental concerns. CARE projects are created to be cooperative agreements and partnerships between grantees, EPA regional offices, and EPA's headquarters.

The following entities are eligible to apply: local, public nonprofit institutions and organizations; federally recognized Indian tribal governments; Native American organizations; private nonprofit institutions and organizations; colleges and universities; and quasi-public nonprofit institutions and organizations (both interstate and intrastate). State governments and their agencies are not eligible to apply, but EPA strives to work with such agencies as supporting partners to CARE communities, where appropriate.

The CARE program will offer a free informational webcast seminar from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. on February 3, 2009. The same seminar will be repeated from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. on February 24, and again from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on February 27. EPA's deadline for receipt of hard copy proposals is 4 p.m. Eastern Time on March 16, 2009. All hard copy proposal packages must be received at EPA Headquarters by Marva King by that deadline in order to be considered for funding. Electronic submissions must be sent to http://www.grants.gov/ no later than 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time on March 16, 2009. Proposals received after these deadlines will not be considered for funding.
