MEDIA ADVISORY: Community to celebrate Recovery Act-funded cleanup of Jacobsville Superfund site in Evansville, Ind.

(CHICAGO – Oct. 7, 2010) Craig Hooks, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency assistant administrator of administration and resources management, will join Evansville Mayor Jonathan Weinzapfel and other community and government officials at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 12, to celebrate the cleanup of more than 260 lead-contaminated properties in the first phase of a 10-year project for the Jacobsville Superfund site.

Place: Corner of Garfield and Michigan streets, Evansville, Ind.

This cleanup in the Jacobsville neighborhood was made possible by $5 million in funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. There was no cost to residents.

The celebration will take place in a lot where previously contaminated vacant land will now be redeveloped into affordable housing for homeless veterans.

President Obama signed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act on Feb.17, 2009, and directed the Recovery Act be implemented with unprecedented transparency and accountability. To that end, the American people can see how every dollar is being invested at www.Recovery.gov.
