MEDIA ADVISORY
U.S. EPA ADMINISTRATOR BROWNER TO ADDRESS SENATOR EDWARD KENNEDY’S 1998 CENTRAL MASSACHUSETTS ECONOMIC SUMMIT

U.S. EPA Administrator Carol M. Browner will join Senator Edward M. Kennedy at the 1998 Central Massachusetts Economic Summit in Worcester, Mass. at 11 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 11. Administrator Browner will detail brownfields redevelopment initiatives as a centerpiece of Clinton Administration efforts to promote economic growth and revitalize communities across the country. Browner will also discuss Worcester – which has more than 200 brownfields sites within its city limits and is known for tackling complex projects -- as a symbol of successful brownfields redevelopment.
Since 1993, the Clinton Administration has taken a series of steps to help communities clean up and redevelop brownfields – abandoned contaminated properties – and return them to thriving centers of American prosperity. These steps include removing legal barriers to redevelopment; creating a national model to determine the best way to revitalize communities; providing over $42 million in seed money to 226 communities for revitalization; and providing a targeted tax incentive to businesses that purchase and cleanup these sites. Nearly $1 billion has been leveraged for redevelopment and over 2,000 jobs have been created. Communities from Cleveland to Sacramento are gaining new jobs, a new tax base and new hope.
