Robin Woods 202-564-7841/woods.robin@epa.gov

The EPA recently awarded contracts to two small business companies for the final development and initial commercialization of new environmental technologies to remove pathogens from drinking water supplies. The contracts were awarded through EPA’s Small Business Innovation Research Program which encourages commercial ventures that protect and enhance the environment and quality of life, create jobs, increase productivity and economic growth, and improve international competitiveness of the country’s technology industry. JCP Technologies Inc. in Austin, Texas, and Lynntech Inc. of College Station, Texas, will be working on different methods to detect and identify Cryptosporidium, a potentially lethal microorganism that can contaminate water supplies. JCP Technologies’ portable biosensor has the potential to provide the possibility of rapid, sensitive and low-cost field testing for these drinking water pathogens. Lyntech’s new method also has potential to be used in food, chemical or biotechnological industries. Another advantage of both methods is that they can be used to detect other microbial pathogens.
