(04/07/04) Applications are now being accepted for the Environmental Protection Agency’s third annual National Award for Smart Growth Achievement. Smart growth development approaches have clear environmental benefits including improved air and water quality, greater preservation of critical habitat and open space, and more clean up and re-use of Brownfield sites. This competition is open to state or local governments, public sector entities and interested parties in urban, suburban and rural areas. Applications will be accepted in four categories: Built Projects, Policies and Regulations, Community Outreach and Education, Small Communities and Overall Excellence in Smart Growth. Successful applicants will incorporate smart growth principles to create places that respect community culture and the environment, foster economic development and promote a better quality of life for current and future generations. Applications are due on June 4. Five winners will be recognized at a ceremony in Washington, DC on November 2004.
