Missouri University of Science and Technology Student Teams Receive $20,000 in Design Grants from P3 Awards Program

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(Kansas City, Kan., Nov. 13, 2008) - Two teams of students from the Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T) in Rolla will each receive $10,000 grants from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's People, Prosperity and the Planet (P3) Program to create innovative designs for sustainable technologies to benefit the developed and developing world.

Of 40 universities in 24 states whose student teams have been selected to receive a total of $430,000 in P3 Phase 1 grants for 2008-2009, Missouri S&T is one of only seven schools to receive more than one grant:

Missouri S&T's Design for an Environmental STEP Ahead: Solar Thermal Electric Panels - The objective of this design project is to develop thermal and electric energy hybrid roof panels in a modular form, to make alternative energy sources affordable for typical homes. Project details

Residential Building Adaptive Energy Management System (R-BAEMS) Design - The research objective of this project is to measure the environmental impact of automated energy management systems for residential structures. Project details

Recipients of the P3 Program's Phase 1 funding use their $10,000 grants to design projects during the academic year, and then attend the National Sustainable Design Expo in Washington, D.C., the following spring. At that event, successful Phase 1 grantees may receive up to $75,000 in additional funding to further their designs, implement them in the field, and move them into the marketplace.

The 5th Annual National Sustainable Design Expo is scheduled for April 18-20, 2009, on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.
