Contact Information: Andrew Spejewski, EPA Press Office (617-918-1014)

BOSTON – On Tuesday, June 4, at 1:00 PM the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection, and three marine trade associations will be announcing a major initiative to reduce pollution from motorboats in Connecticut.

The announcement will be made at a press conference at the Milford Boat Works in Milford, Conn.

Speakers will include:

    • Robert W. Varney, regional administrator for EPA's New England Office;
    • Arthur J. Rocque, Jr., commissioner of the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection
    • Grant W. Westerson, executive director, Connecticut Marine Trades Association
    • John McKnight, director of environmental and safety compliance, National Marine Manufacturers Association
    • John P. Keeter, president, Marine Retailers Association of America
Connecticut has over 100,000 registered boats. Current gasoline marine engines can emit significant amounts of smog-forming air pollution and discharge unburned oil and gasoline directly to Connecticut's waters, polluting them with MtBE, benzene and other toxic chemicals.
