Town of Hurlock Receives EPA Mid-Atlantic Operations and Maintenance Award

PHILADELPHIA (March 31, 2010) - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency today presented the Town of Hurlock in Dorchester County, Maryland, with an award for excellence in their operation and maintenance of the local wastewater treatment facility.

“This award recognizes operators who are contributing to our clean water goals by running water pollution control facilities efficiently and effectively,” said Shawn M. Garvin, Regional Administrator for EPA’s mid-Atlantic Region. “EPA applauds the outstanding job that the employees at the Hurlock Wastewater Treatment Plant are doing by treating the town’s wastewater to a high standard that minimizes the impacts to the watershed.”

This regional award honors the staff involved in the day-to-day operations of the facility and recognizes the commitment by local officials to maintaining and protecting their community’s wastewater infrastructure. It also increases public awareness of wastewater treatment facilities' contribution to clean water.

EPA reviews data and inspects facilities to determine award winners. Award recipients are selected for their performance in complying with wastewater discharge permits, maintenance management, laboratory practices, personnel training, and public awareness needs. In 2006, the Hurlock Wastewater Treatment Plant was upgraded to a more advanced biological treatment, to help reduce nutrient pollution.

The Hurlock plant was selected in 2009 for demonstrating outstanding performance in permit compliance, operations and maintenance management, and maintaining a complex treatment process with only three certified operators.

EPA’s mid-Atlantic Region includes Pennsylvania, Delaware, District of Columbia, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia.
