MAJOR FISH KILL LEADS TO GUILTY PLEA BY IDADO COMPANY

Avonmore West Inc., of Richfield, Idaho, and Hugh Royal, the processing plant manager, pleaded guilty on April 7 in the U.S. District Court for the District of Idaho to violating the Clean Water Act (CWA). The defendants admitted causing the illegal discharge of ammonia into the Little Wood River on Sept. 2, 1998 when the Idaho Division of Environmental Quality and the Idaho Department of Fish and Game found a fish kill of over 64,000 fish along 19 miles of the Little Wood River that they attributed to the ammonia discharge. Sentencing will be set on completion of a pre-sentence report. This case was investigated by EPA’s Criminal Investigation Division with the assistance of the Idaho State Police and the Idaho Division of Environmental Quality and is being prosecuted by the U.S. Department of Justice.
