PRODUCE SIGNIFICANT COST SAVINGS AND POLLUTION REDUCTIONS
Demonstrating the financial and environmental benefits of pollution prevention, more than 8,000 businesses and organizations saved over $1.6 billion and significantly reduced pollution last year through participation in EPA’s voluntary partnership programs, known as Partners for the Environment. These programs focus on cutting waste and conserving energy and natural resources in a variety of settings such as industrial and agricultural operations, service industries, government agencies, hospitals and schools. In 1997, air pollution reductions included 79 million metric tons of CO2 emissions, a significant step towards preventing greenhouse gas formation. Participants also reduced solid waste levels by 7.6 million tons, avoiding the need to dispose of such wastes in landfills, and prevented more than 750,000 pounds of toxic emissions, in some cases reducing use of chemicals by as much as 50 percent. In addition, participants saved 5.8 million gallons of water and enough energy---1,020 trillion BTUs---to light 56 million households for a year. The Partners for the Environment effort complements traditional regulatory approaches to environmental protection. Based on the benefits of the 20 or more partnerships and current growth rates, EPA projects that these nonregulatory programs will attract more than 13,000 participants by 2000.
