50th Climate Leaders Partner Commits to Voluntary Reductions of Greenhouse Gas Emissions

(11/25/2003) American Electric Power (AEP) has become the 50th partner to join EPA’s Climate Leaders program. Climate Leaders, a voluntary government-industry partnership launched in February 2002, is a key component of the Bush Administration’s greenhouse gas emission reduction strategy. The partnership challenges businesses to develop a comprehensive greenhouse gas emissions inventory and then to set aggressive, emissions reduction goals. EPA has approved AEP’s Climate Leaders emissions reduction goal and has recently announced the following additional commitments by Cinergy Corp., FPL Group and International Paper: AEP pledged to reduce total greenhouse gas emissions by four percent below an average 1998-2001 base year by 2006; Cinergy pledged to reduce total greenhouse gas emissions by five percent below a 2000 base year by 2010; FPL Group pledged to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 18 percent per kWh from 2001 to 2008; and International Paper pledged to reduce total greenhouse gas emissions by 15 percent from 2000 to 2010. Climate Leaders partners work with EPA to develop corporate-wide greenhouse gas emissions inventories and set aggressive, emissions reduction goals. Partners develop their greenhouse gas inventory using the Climate Leaders’ Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventory Protocol. Companies report emissions of the six major greenhouse gases from all major on-site emissions of greenhouse gases and emissions related to the electricity they purchase.
