Students to be Recognized for Innovative Environmental Projects

(Washington, D.C. - April 22, 2004) Students from across the country will be honored at a White House ceremony today. The students are the recipients of the 2003 President’s Environmental Youth Awards (PEYA). Each student receiving an award developed an innovative project that promotes awareness and encourages people of all ages to protect their environment through community involvement.

Some projects include: starting a recycling and environmental education campaign that led to the first “green” playground in the area made from recycled materials; conducting a science project that demonstrates the benefits of crushing used oil filters and recycling the oil, and sharing the results with their community; and creating a new pedestrian and bike trail.

“These students are to be applauded for their commitment to making the environment in their communities better,” said EPA Acting Deputy Administrator Stephen L. Johnson, who, along with President Bush, will acknowledge the students. “Due to their creative work, the environment and communities across the country will benefit for years to come.”

EPA’s 10 regional offices selected the 2003 PEYA winners. The PEYA awards have been presented annually since 1971 to honor students in kindergarten through twelfth grade who develop projects that help protect local environments and promote local environmental awareness in their communities.

Each year, contestants submit applications along with summaries of their environmental projects to EPA’s 10 regional offices. Regional panels judge projects on environmental need, accomplishment of goals, long-term environmental benefits and positive impact on local communities. The panels also consider project design, coordination, implementation, innovation and soundness of approach, and the students’ effectiveness in presenting the projects.
