FOR RELEASE: FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 17, 1999
STATEMENT BY
EPA ADMINISTRATOR CAROL M. BROWNER
ON
SENATE FULL COMMITTEE MARK UP OF EPA’S BUDGET
9/16/99

I deeply regret that the Senate continues to cut programs vital for adequately protecting America’s public health -- programs that provide for the quality of our drinking water, our air, our rivers and lakes, and the full enforcement of our environmental laws. I am equally troubled that global environmental efforts have also been cut deeply or even eliminated. For instance, all funding has been removed for implementing the treaty to protect the earth’s ozone layer – the atmospheric layer that screens out harmful levels of ultraviolet radiation. President Clinton’s environmental agenda ensures the full and fair funding of all programs necessary for meeting the environmental challenges of the next century. We hope that the full Senate will restore the President’s programs.
