OII SUPERFUND SITE FINAL CLEANUP PLAN PROPOSED

(San Francisco)--The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) today announced a proposed plan for the final cleanup at the Operating Industries Inc. (OII) Superfund site, Monterey Park, Calif.

The public is invited to attend a community meeting and provide comments on the proposed plan and other considered cleanup alternatives. The meeting will be held at 7 p.m., Wednesday, June 12, 1996, at the Schurr High School, 820 N. Wilcox Ave., Montebello, Calif.

"After a careful investigation of the environmental problems at this site, U.S. EPA has proposed a final cleanup plan," said Keith Takata, U.S. EPA's regional Superfund director. "U.S. EPA has evaluated various cleanup options and will make a final decision after hearing from the public. This comment period allows the community an opportunity to actively participate in the decision-making process."

U.S. EPA proposes to collect landfill liquids at the boundary of the site and to treat the collected liquids at the on-site leachate treatment plant. The proposed plan will also provide for long-term operation and maintenance of all site control facilities. The proposed remedial measures are in addition to the Agency's earlier cleanup decisions, which include a landfill gas mitigation control system, landfill cover, and surface water management system.

The public may also comment on the proposed cleanup plan by

The OII landfill is a 190-acre Superfund site which operated from 1948 to 1984 and accepted industrial and municipal wastes. The landfill contains a wide variety of hazardous substances and is one of the most contaminated sites in the nation.

OII was placed on the National Priorities List (NPL) in May 1986. The NPL is U.S. EPA's list of hazardous waste sites potentially posing the greatest long-term threat to public health and the environment.
