EPA to Hold Public Meeting Regarding Columbia Organic Chemical Company Site in Columbia, S.C.

(Atlanta, Ga. – January 11, 2008) The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will hold a public meeting on Thursday, January 17, 2008 regarding the Columbia Organic Chemical Company (COCC) site in Columbia, S.C. EPA and the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control officials will provide information and answer questions about the EPA removal action underway at the site.

The public meeting will begin at 7:00 p.m. at the Hampton Park Recreational Center, 1117 Brandon Avenue, Columbia, S.C. 29209. Community members interested in obtaining additional information are encouraged to contact Sherryl A. Carbonaro, EPA Community Involvement Coordinator, at (678) 575-7355.

The COCC site is located at 912 Drake Street in Columbia, S.C. The facility operated as a specialty chemical facility from 1944 until 1984, at which time the operation was relocated to the Cassatt community in Kershaw County, S.C. The site is a three acre property surrounded by a mixture of residential and commercial properties.

ATTENTION: A news conference will be held at the Hampton Park Recreational Center, 117 Brandon Ave. in Columbia, S.C. at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 17, 2008. EPA officials will be available to answer media questions concerning the removal action in progress at the site. This arrangement will allow for the public to use the entire public meeting to get information and have their questions answered.
