(Anchorage, AK. - May 15, 2006) Today the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced a settlement for $69,078 with Dean's Auto Salvage for failure to properly manage hazardous waste and used oil at its facility located at 720 E. Whitney Road, Anchorage, Alaska.

Dean's Auto Salvage will pay the penalties over a three year period, to make payments easier on this small company.

EPA is pleased that Dean’s Auto Salvage has agreed to this settlement and that they have taken the necessary steps to avoid these kinds of violations from happening in the future.

Between September 1998 and August 2003, EPA conducted several hazardous waste compliance investigations at the facility and issued Notices of Violation due to improper management of solvent waste, paint waste and used oil. Many of the drums of used oil found during these inspections contained compounds that are considered hazardous waste. Dean's provided some of the used oil to private entities that used this potentially hazardous used oil as fuel for space heaters.

"When properly managed, used oil can be beneficially used for many purposes," said Mike Bussell, Director of the Office of Compliance and Enforcement, EPA Region 10 in Seattle. "Unfortunately, when the used oil is not properly managed, contaminants in the oil can be released into the environment with harmful effects."
