Release Date: 9/9/2005
Contact Information: For more information contact the Office of External Affairs at (214) 665-2200.

Residents in St. Tammany Parish's Mandeville neighborhoods - from Highway 190 (Florida St) to the shoreline of Lake Pontchartrain - will receive curbside pickup of household hazardous materials.  The waste will be collected by the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality, EPA and local officials from Saturday, Sept. 10 through Sept. 17.

For information about your scheduled pickup, please call 800-401-1327.

Household hazardous materials are found throughout most homes.  Area residents are encouraged to collect flood damaged chemical containers and place them curbside for proper disposal.  Household hazardous items may contain materials that should never be dumped, poured down drains or street sewers.

Where possible, residents should clearly mark containers before placing out for disposal.  Leaking containers should be placed in plastic bags to prevent spills.

Items that CANNOT be accepted are animal manure and carcasses, human waste or other biological (anything blood-related or bodily fluids, home IVs, tubing or other dialysis equipment), sharps or needles, and spoiled food or mold damaged items.

Examples of materials to be collected include electronics, batteries, computer hardware, paint, batteries, cleaning solvents, lawn and garden products and more.

For additional information about recycling, paint disposal and common potentially hazardous materials home, visit the DEQ and EPA websites at http://www.deq.louisiana.gov/assistance/recycling
or http://www.epa.gov.
