The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency has begun a Superfund hazardous substance removal at the Sierra Chemical Company Site in Anniston, Calhoun County, Alabama.  The removal is a short-term cleanup intended to stabilize or clean up a site that poses an imminent and substantial threat to human health or the environment. The removal will take place under the authority and direction of the Agency’s Emergency Response and Removal Branch (ERRB).  Estimated cost of the removal action is approximately $450,000.

The Sierra Chemical Company Site is located at 2716 Noble Street. The site is a former pesticide manufacturing facility. The company repackaged commercial chemical products, mainly pesticides. The site consists of two buildings; a warehouse, where chemicals were mixed and packaged and a burned-out house. Approximately 200 drums of various pesticide products and other chemicals are abandoned on site.
