FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
No. 10-OPA100

CHICAGO (Sept. 3, 2010) --- U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 5 will hold open house-style availability sessions Thursday, Sept. 9, to discuss with residents proposed changes to the cleanup plan for the Muskego Sanitary Landfill site.

There will be two sessions: 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at the Muskego Public Library, S73 W16663 Janesville Road., Muskego, Wis.

EPA is modifying its previous cleanup decisions on this Superfund site. Changes involve evaluating whether natural processes are reducing contaminant levels in ground water; improving institutional controls such as ordinances and deeds; evaluating current techniques including landfill liquid and gas collections systems, landfill cap and ground-water treatment and monitoring systems; and developing a wellhead protection plan to ensure contaminated ground water does not affect City Well 7.

EPA believes the changes reflect the best approach for cleaning up volatile organic compounds in ground water at and near the landfill. The report outlining the differences, along with other site-related documents, will be available for review at the library and at www.epa.gov/region5/sites/muskego.

For further information about the Muskego site or for special accommodations at the sessions, contact Susan Pastor, EPA Community Involvement Coordinator at pastor.susan@epa.gov, or call 800-621-8431 Ext. 31325 between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. weekdays.
