PA DIR. TO SPEAK AT INTERNAT'L STRATOSPHERIC OZONE CONFERENCE

FOR RELEASE: FRIDAY, OCTOBER 18, 1996

UNITED NATIONS ENVIRONMENTAL DIRECTOR TO SPEAK AT INTERNATIONAL STRATOSPHERIC OZONE CONFERENCE

EPA, in cooperation with the Alliance for Responsible Atmospheric Policy and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), is sponsoring the 1996 International Conference on Ozone Protection. The conference provides an opportunity for key players in the battle against stratospheric ozone-depleting substances to herald their accomplishments and to present results of scientific research(The conference addresses only stratospheric ozone, not the ground-level ozone, or smog issue). The conference will be held next Monday through Wednesday, Oct. 21-23, at the Washington Hilton in Washington, D.C. The Executive Director of UNEP, Elizabeth Dowdeswell, will be the keynote speaker, addressing the plenary session of the conference on Monday at 9 a.m. As part of the conference, EPA will hold an awards ceremony the evening of Oct. 22, to recognize individuals and organizations making extraordinary progress in eliminating stratospheric ozone depleters. Each year the Agency solicits nominations for the Stratospheric Ozone Protection Awards from individuals and organizations, private and public. Candidates must demonstrate one or more of the following criteria: originality and public purpose; persuasive moral and/or organizational leadership; or actual elimination of chemical emissions. The Alliance for Responsible Atmospheric Policy, organized in 1980, is a U.S. industry coalition of several hundred producers and users of products containing stratospheric ozone depleters and global warming gases. For further information about the conference, contact Nancy Smagin at 202-233-9126.
