NATIONAL PRIORITIES LIST

Chris Paulitz 202-564-9556 / paulitz.chris@epa.gov

The Environmental Protection Agency is adding 10 new hazardous waste sites to the National Priorities List (NPL), and is proposing 10 new sites to be added. The primary purpose of the NPL is to guide the EPA in determining which sites warrant further investigation. Generally, a site is proposed for the NPL if preliminary investigations indicate that it warrants further action and final listing on the NPL. Proposed sites must go through a public comment period before they can be finalized on the NPL. The NPL now contains 1,236 final sites; 1,076 in the General Superfund Section and 160 in the Federal Facilities Section. There are also 67 sites proposed and awaiting final agency action; 61 in the General Superfund Section and six in the Federal Facilities Section. Final and proposed sites now total 1,303. The 10 added sites are: Cooper Drum Company, South Gate, Calif.; Griggs & Walnut Ground Water Plume, Las Cruces, N.M.; Shenandoah Road Ground Water Contamination, East Fishkill, N.Y.; Nuclear Metals, Inc., Concord, Mass.; Sutton Brook Disposal Area, Tewksbury, Mass.; Consolidated Iron and Metal, Newburgh, N.Y.; Taylor Lumber and Treating, Sheridan, Ore.; Lower Darby Creek Area, Delaware/Philadelphia Counties, Pa.; Malone Service Company, Inc., Texas City, Texas; Elizabeth Mine, Strafford, Vt. The 10 proposed sites are: Casmalia Resources, Casmalia, Calif.; Matthiessen and Hegeler Zinc Company, LaSalle, Ill.; American Creosote Works, Inc., Louisville, Mo.; MacKenzie Chemical Works, Inc., Central Islip, N.Y.; Valmont TCE, Hazle Township and West Hazleton, Pa.; Watson Johnson Landfill, Richland Township, Pa.; Patrick Bayou, Deer Park, Texas; R & H Oil Company, San Antonio, Texas; Eureka Mills, Eureka, Utah; Ely Copper Mine, Vershire, Vt. This action appears in today's Federal Register, with a 60-day public comment period to follow.
