INDIANA MAN PLEADS TO DUMPING GASOLINE INTO SEWER

Luke C. Hester 202-564-7818 / hester.luke@epa.gov

On June 29, Daniel W. Axe of Dugger, Ind., pleaded guilty to charges that he violated the Clean Water Act by pumping liquid containing gasoline from his service station into a city sewer. Axe purchased a service station in Dugger in 1999. This illegal disposal created a fire and explosion hazard in the sewer system and the contents of the Dugger sewage treatment plant had to be removed and replaced due to the contamination. The case was investigated by EPA’s Criminal Investigation Division and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. It was prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s office in Indianapolis.
