RED ROOF INNS AND MOTEL 6 RIDE THE WAVE

Red Roof Inns, Motel 6 and Studio 6 Lodging have joined EPA’s Water Alliances for Voluntary Efficiency, or WAVE program, which promotes efficiencies leading to significant water and energy savings. The motels’ corporate parent, Accor Economy Lodging, is the nation’s largest owner and operator of economy lodging, the ninth largest U.S. hotel company overall, and the third largest hospitality company in the world, with world headquarters in Paris and U.S. headquarters in Dallas. As the newest WAVE Partner, Accor adds 980 U.S.-based properties and 110,288 rooms to the conservation program. WAVE conservatively estimates that water efficiency measures implemented at all of Accor’s U.S.-based properties could save a total of over 800 millions gallons of water and 200 billion BTUs in associated energy consumption each year, thereby preventing nearly 1200 metric tons of carbon dioxide air pollution annually from power generation. WAVE encourages commercial businesses and institutions to reduce water consumption while increasing efficiency, profitability and competitiveness. The program, launched in l992, has initially focused on the lodging industry but now includes office buildings, educational institutions and medical facilities. To date, WAVE has 40 partners, including the large hotel chains Westin, Hyatt, Sheraton, Outrigger and LaQuinta. Potentially, the lodging industry could save 32 billion gallons of water per year and over one trillion BTUs per year of associated energy use.
