(3/11/08) The Environmental Protection Agency has announced a selection decision for desktop services for its Headquarters Offices, as well as offices at Research Triangle Park in North Carolina, Cincinnati, Ohio and remote laboratories. The approach will allow EPA employees to perform their jobs more effectively, and improve service to users dramatically, while saving the agency $115 million over eight years. The selection decision was in favor of a proposal developed by the agency, known as the Most Efficient Organization (MEO).

The MEO's approach calls for new personal computers, a new approach for services, including a centralized helpdesk to provide remote or on-site support, automatic software updates, greater security and protection of IT resources, and more energy efficient equipment. Deployment will take place over a one-year period starting on Sept. 1, 2008.

A single contractor will provide the services with oversight and monitoring by EPA employees. EPA staff affected by the selection decision will continue their employment with the agency.
