ALABAMA COMPANY CHARGED WITH ILLEGAL WASTE DISPOSAL
On March 11, the Rainsville Church Pew Co. Inc., of Rainsville, Ala., was charged in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Alabama in Birmingham with illegally storing hazardous waste at its refinishing plant in Dekalb County. The charges allege that the company generated refinishing sludges and other hazardous wastes and knowingly stored 17 55-gallon drums containing toluene and other ignitable hazardous waste without permits required by the federal government. If convicted, the company could face a maximum fine of up to $500,000 and/or a maximum period of probation of five years.
