EPA to Hold Public Meeting for the Aberdeen Contaminated Groundwater Site in Aberdeen, NC

(ATLANTA – September 6, 2011) The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will host a public meeting regarding the Aberdeen Contaminated Groundwater Site on Wednesday, September 07, 2011, at 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Aberdeen Town Hall located at 115 North Poplar Street in Aberdeen, Moore County, NC.
The EPA and the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources (NCDENR) are hosting the meeting to present information on the Interim Action Proposed Plan for cleaning up the Site and obtain community input on the plan. EPA has studied the Site and now EPA and NCDENR believe that the following actions are needed to protect public health and the environment:

• Install a groundwater extraction system along with all the necessary piping/controls, treat extracted groundwater, and discharge the treated groundwater
• Complete the delineation of the plumes and implement a monitoring program to 1) evaluate the progress of remediation/restoration of the aquifers, 2) monitor the capture zones created by the groundwater extraction system, and 3) monitor the effectiveness of the treatment system
• Install wellhead treatment via activated carbon filtration at two Town of Aberdeen Municipal Supply wells
• Determine the nature of the anomalies identified by the geophysical investigation on the Powder Metal Property and conduct Five-Year Reviews

The public has until Thursday, September 29, 2011, to submit written comments on the Interim Action Proposed Plan.
