EPA ADMINISTRATOR CHRISTIE WHITMAN VISITS SUNY ALBANY’S ATMOSPHERIC SCIENCES RESEARCH CENTER

U.S. EPA Administrator Christie Whitman tomorrow will be in Albany, N.Y. to tour the Atmospheric Sciences Research Center (ASRC) at the State University of New York and discuss the President’s Clear Skies Initiative. Whitman has been traveling around the country since the President announced the plan in February to talk about the significant environmental and health benefits of passage of Clear Skies legislation.

The President’s Clear Skies Initiative will set mandatory cuts in the emissions of three major pollutants from power plants and will over the next decade, remove a total of 35 million more tons of nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide and mercury from the air than will be eliminated by the current Clean Air Act. At the same time, Americans will experience tens of thousands fewer cases of asthma and other chronic respiratory problems. ASRC was established in 1961 for the purpose of promoting and encouraging programs in sciences that relate to the atmospheric environment. The center boasts research groups in air quality, air quality modeling and atmospheric chemistry among others.
