Statement of EPA Administrator Carol M. Browner
on Final Passage of Everglades Restoration Legislation

11/3/00

For the first time in history, we have a comprehensive plan for making the heart of the Everglades pulse once again with clean, abundant water. Working together, we have crafted a blueprint to restore, sustain and preserve the River of Grass. The passage of this legislation reflects the unprecedented efforts of the Clinton/Gore Administration, Congress, the state of Florida, tribal leaders, the environmental community and agricultural industry, to restore one of America’s greatest natural treasures.

This achievement is due to the invaluable leadership of President Clinton and Vice President Gore, Senators Smith and Baucus, and the members of the Florida Congressional delegation. As a native Floridian, I want to especially thank Vice President Al Gore, whose personal commitment and determination will help make restoration of this natural wonder a reality.

The legislation includes critical provisions for restoring one of America’ greatest natural treasures. This legislation, a top environmental priority of the Clinton/Gore Administration, provides a comprehensive plan that will restore, sustain and protect the Everglades. It takes the first critical steps needed to protect water quality and provide for urban and other needs of a fast-growing population of South Florida.
