Cascade Water Alliance shows consumers how to conserve water and save money during National “Fix a Leak Week”

(Bellevue, Wash. – March 15, 2010) The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency commends Cascade Water Alliance, a non-profit wholesale water provider in King County, Washington, on its work to promote the WaterSense Program’s National “Fix a Leak Week.” The goal of this week (March 15-21) is to remind Americans to check their plumbing fixtures and irrigation systems for leaks. Over one trillion gallons of precious drinking water leak from the nation’s homes each year.

Cascade Water Alliance, a long-time WaterSense Promotional Partner, is doing its part to help customers conserve water and save money. For the past two years, Cascade has mailed toilet leak detection dye to every home in its service area. The dye allows homeowners to easily check their toilets for leaks. Cascade’s follow-up survey showed this effort was highly successful, estimating 128,000 gallons of water were saved per day.

“EPA is proud to recognize Cascade Water Alliance as one of the leaders in the Pacific Northwest in helping to advance water conservation,” said Mike Bussell, EPA’s Office of Water and Watersheds Director in Seattle. “EPA Region 10 is pleased that Cascade Water Alliance is actively promoting Fix a Leak Week.”

This March, Cascade Water Alliance is again mailing leak detection dye to 100,000 homes in its service area. Cascade is also airing a commercial on local cable TV channels to prompt people to watch for the dye mailer. Cascade’s additional promotion for Fix a Leak Week includes bill stuffers, leak repair training offered through local hardware stores, and an online training video that shows people how to replace a leaking toilet flapper. Cascade’s WaterSense toilet replacement program has also been successful, with nearly 2,000 homes and businesses upgrading to WaterSense labeled toilets since the beginning of 2009. The program includes free recycling of old toilets.

Cascade Water Alliance is a non-profit corporation, comprised of the cities of Bellevue, Redmond, Kirkland, Issaquah, Tukwila, Covington Water District and the Sammamish Plateau and Skyway Water and Sewer to provide safe, clean and reliable water to its 370,000 residents and 22,000 businesses.
