The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced today that it will begin the first of several lead removals in Anniston, Alabama. A removal is a short-term cleanup intended to stabilize or clean up a site that poses an imminent and substantial threat to human health or the environment. The removal will take place under the authority and direction of the Agency's Emergency Response and Removal Branch.

EPA will be removing contaminated surface soil from properties where lead concentrations are above 1200 parts per million or higher. Excavated areas will be filled with clean material.
