EPA Honors Northwest Green Power Buyers

“Conventional electricity generation is the nation’s single largest industrial source of air pollution,” said EPA Regional Administrator L. John Iani. “Northwest organizations buying green power are providing a great example of environmental leadership.”

Green power is electricity generated by renewable energy sources including solar, wind and geo-thermal sources. EPA encourages organizations to buy green power through a voluntary program, the Green Power Partnership, which is working to standardize green power procurement as part of best-practice environmental management. Partners in the Green Power Partnership pledge to switch to green power for a portion of their electricity needs in return for EPA technical assistance and public recognition.

At today’s ceremony, EPA honored the following Northwest organizations for their commitment to green power: Audubon Society of Portland, Ashforth Pacific, Batdorf & Bronson Coffee Roasters, Cayuse Vineyards, Boise Co-op, Bonneville Environmental Foundation, City of Portland, OR, CH2M Hill, Clark County, WA, Climate Solutions, Energy Trust of Oregon, Earthlight Books, Friends of Trees, Grapefields Wine Bar & Café, Global Energy Concepts, Kinko’s, Merchants, Nike / World Headquarters, Norm Thompson Outfitters, Renewable Northwest Project, Shuksan Energy Consulting, Staples, Stoel Rives, TerraClean, The Joinery, The Running Y Ranch Resort, Trout Unlimited / Columbia River Basin Field Offices, U.S. Air Force / Fairchild Air Force Base, U.S. Department of Energy / Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Walla Walla Valley Chamber of Commerce, Willapa Logging Company, Xantrex Technology.
“Nationwide, the Green Power Partnership now includes almost 200 organizations – including leading companies in the Northwest. Partners in the Green Power Partnership – including Fortune 500 companies, states, federal agencies, trade associations and universities – have made a combined total commitment to almost one billion kilowatt hours of green power annually. If generated by conventional means, the annual emissions associated with that much electricity would include over 1.4 billion pounds of carbon dioxide, roughly the annual emissions of about 120,000 cars,” Iani added.
