Release Date: 08/14/2000
Contact Information: Carl Terry, (404) 562-8325, terry.carl@epa.gov
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has announced its intent to delete the Palmetto Recycling Superfund site from the National Priorities List (NPL) of hazardous waste sites. Cleanup of the site, which is located in Columbia, SC, has been completed. EPA in conjunction with the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control, has determined that all appropriate cleanup measures have been implemented and that no further cleanup by responsible parties is appropriate under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA). Additionally, EPA has determined that remedial activities conducted at the site are effective and fully protective of public health and the environment. Deletion of the site from the NPL will not preclude eligibility for subsequent Superfund-financed actions if future conditions warrant such actions. The public is invited to comment on the proposed deletion of the site from the NPL. The public comment period will begin on August 14, 2000, and will extend for 30 days. The decision to delete the site from the NPL will be effective October 13, 2000 unless EPA receives significant adverse or critical comments by September 13, 2000. If adverse comments are received, EPA will publish in the Federal Register a timely withdrawal of the decision to delete the site in the Federal Register. Written comments must be postmarked no later than September 13, 2000, and should be addressed to Yvonne Jones, U.S. EPA, North Site Management Branch, 61 Forsyth Street, Atlanta, Georgia 30303, (1-800-435-9233, ext. 28793) or emailed to jones.yvonneo@epa.gov.

The deletion docket, which contains supporting information on EPA's decision to delete this site and other site related documents are available for public review at EPA and the Northeast Regional Library, 7490 Parklane Road in Columbia (803) 736-6575.
