Denver -- The Nucor Steel and Vulcraft plants in Utah have a history of serious violations of environmental laws. Nucor has agreed that in the future, all its facilities will use proper air emissions controls and will handle waste using appropriate methods. In addition to paying a $9 million penalty, Nucor also must cut emissions at its Plymouth and Brigham City facilities, install new pollution control equipment and develop a plan to minimize environmental impacts from its operations.

"The agreement, when fully implemented, will protect the future health and environment for citizens in Utah and across the country. It also alerts other companies in the iron and steel industry that they must prevent similar problems from occurring at their facilities," said EPA Regional Enforcement Director Carol Rushin. "This national settlement addresses all of Nucor's pollution and compliance concerns in a fair, cost-effective, consistent manner."
