EPA PROPOSES CONNECTICUT SITE TO SUPERFUND

BOSTON - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) today proposed the Broad Brook Mill site in East Windsor, Connecticut, to the National Priorities List (NPL), commonly known as the Superfund. The Superfund is EPA's list of the country's hazardous waste sites that have been identified for possible long-term cleanup by the federal government. Superfund makes public funds available to clean up toxic waste sites when private financing is unavailable.

Located at 110-112 Main Street and 1-21 Brookside Drive, the site includes a 21 unit condominium complex, a commercial office building, a commercial retail strip mall, and a vacant powerhouse building. Surface soils are contaminated with metals and semi-volatile organic compounds. In 1988, the Connecticut Department of Public Health recommended that children not play in areas where soils have been identified as contaminated.

Over a 200 year industrial history, the former mill buildings have been used for a variety of operations including a grist mill, saw mill, a tannery, a wool manufacturer, a manufacturer of printed circuit boards, a machine shop, and for storage. Some of the former mill buildings were destroyed in a 1986 fire. The surviving mill building was later converted into residential units.
