Comment Period Extended for Omaha Lead Superfund Site Plan

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(Kansas City, Kan., Dec. 2, 2008) - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has extended the public comment period for the Omaha Lead Superfund Site's final proposed plan to December 31, 2008. The plan describes EPA's approach for addressing lead-contaminated soil at residential properties in eastern Omaha.

EPA's preferred final remedy would lower the action level for lead-contaminated soil to 400 parts per million, which would add approximately 10,000 properties to the area's ongoing soil lead cleanup efforts. The Agency considered phosphate treatment of lead-contaminated soil as an alternative approach, but has elected to propose that excavation and soil replacement continue under the final remedy.

EPA's proposed plan also calls for the stabilization (repainting) of deteriorated lead-based paint at eligible properties, as well as a response to contaminated interior dust.

Two public hearings were held in Omaha on November 18, 2008, at which the proposed plan was presented and comments were taken.

EPA will consider all public comments on the plan prior to making a final decision. The Agency encourages citizen engagement.
