HARBOR GATEWAY NEIGHBORHOOD TO BE SAMPLED FOR DDT

Informational Open House will be held April 7th at 7 p.m.


     SAN FRANCISCO -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will hold an
open house to review DDT sampling plans with residents of the Harbor Gateway
neighborhood of South Los Angeles.  The EPA will be sampling the yards of over
150 homes in the vicinity of the former Montrose Chemical facility for DDT
contamination.  Details of the $1.2 million project will be provided at the
open house.

                      (no formal presentation)
               When:  Wednesday, April 7, 1999
                      7 p.m. - 9 p.m.
               Where: Holiday Inn, 19800 Vermont Ave., Torrance.
               Why:   Provide one-on-one, bilingual information sources for  
                       community members to give an overview of DDT sampling  
                      plans and answer any questions.

                Information tables will include:

               Sampling process and sampling equipment table
               Sampling locations
               History of activities at site
               Del Amo Action Committee
               Del Amo Community Advisory Panel

     The former Montrose Chemical plant manufactured the pesticide DDT at a
facility on Normandy Avenue between 1947 and 1982.  DDT was one of the most
widely used pesticides in the world until 1972 when its use was banned in the
United States.  The Montrose Chemical site was added to the Superfund list of
national high priority sites for cleanup in 1989.
