Public is Invited to Series of Workshops to Learn More About EPA’s Proposed Basin Cleanup Plan

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is holding a series of public workshops outlining possible mine waste clean up actions in the Coeur d’Alene and Spokane River Basin. According to the organizers, those attending the workshops will have a chance to learn more about the results of extensive studies in the Basin and share opinions about the cleanup plan, which is still being developed.

Workshops are scheduled in Wallace(8/14), Medimont(8/15) and Coeur d’Alene(8/16)in Idaho. A workshop will also be held in Spokane, Washington, on Tuesday, August 21st. At each location, the workshops will be held from 6 pm to 9 pm. The Wallace workshop will cover possible cleanup actions in Wallace, Osburn, Mullan, Burke, Nine Mile, Canyon Creek and other upper Basin areas east of Kellogg. The Idaho meetings will be hosted and facilitated by the Citizen Advisory Committee’s Remedial Investigation/Feasibility Study Task Force, while Washington Citizen Advisory Committee will do the same for the meeting in Spokane.

Workshop format will include an overview presentation, followed by a general question and answer session and an “open house”. Technical experts from state, tribal and other federal entities will be also be present provide additional information. Each will emphasize possible cleanup actions in the particular area of the Basin where the workshop is being held. In the fall, EPA is planning to release its proposed cleanup plan for a formal public review and comment period. These workshops are a chance to provide initial thoughts and feelings about the proposed cleanup plan.
