EPA ADMINISTRATOR TO ADDRESS WHITE HOUSE CONFERENCE ON

ENVIRONMENTAL TECHNOLOGY

MEDIA ADVISORY

EPA Administrator Carol M. Browner will address more than 700 leaders from business, environmental, federal, state and local government at the White House Conference on Environmental Technology, Dec. 12-13, 1994 at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Washington, D.C. The conference marks a key milestone in the Clinton Administration's effort to promote the development and commercialization of new advanced technologies for more effective pollution cleanup, monitoring, and prevention.

Browner will give a major speech on Monday evening about the Clinton Administration's commitment to the role of environmental technology in finding common sense, cost-effective ways to protect public health and natural resources in communities across this country and around the world.

Browner will give the keynote address at 6:30 p.m. dinner (to be held at the Convention Center, across the street from the Grand Hyatt Hotel) following other activities during the day:

11:00 a.m. Browner is introduced by Dr. John Gibbons, Assistant to the President for Science and Technology. Browner will speak about the Green University Program and introduce Dr. Steven Trachtenberg, President of George Washington University, and they will sign the EPA-GWU Green University Initiative. GWU plans to link together the greening of its education and training activities, research program and health care services by using EPA projects such as Green Lights, CFC replacements, sustainability concepts, and recycling in projects at its campuses and facilities.

11:15 a.m. Press Availability: Browner and Dr. Steven J. Trachtenberg will announce GWU's plan to implement the "Green University Program" with EPA to collaborate on environmental management and sustainability matters.

11:30 a.m. Browner will join Hazel O'Leary, Secretary of the Dept. of the Energy, to honor corporate leadership in undertaking voluntary technology enhancement and greenhouse gas emission reduction actions, under the Climate Wise program, a joint effort of EPA and DOE. Since its launch last April at the White House Conference on Climate Action, Climate Wise have expanded to include companies representing over 3 percent of US industrial energy use.
