Three Massachusetts Residents Win Environmental Educator Awards

BOSTON - Four residents of Massachusetts were among 11 residents of New England who were recognized this week by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for demonstrating exceptional work in drinking water education.

The Environmental Educator Awards were given out during a Drinking Water Day ceremony at the Massachusetts State House today.

"These citizens have helped spread the word on the importance of clean, safe drinking water," said Mindy S. Lubber, Regional Administrator for EPA New England. "They are being recognized for efforts that will help ensure our drinking water is protected into the future."

The recipients in Massachusetts are:

      Janice Gannon, Osterville, Mass.: Gannon has worked for two years at the Centerville-Osterville-Marston Mills Water Department. Five months after starting with the Water Department she put together an education programs with elementary schools in the district.
    • Moira O'Brien, Orange, Mass.: O'Brien is principal of the Fisher Hill School in Orange and has been a huge supporter of the Orange Water Department's effort to start water education at an early age. The school has adopted the use of water education programs provided by the local water department.
    • Richard N. Porter, Orleans, Mass.: Porter is a fifth grade teacher in the Orleans Elementary School who has involved other teachers in water issues by holding field trips with other grade 5 classes to study water quality and wildlife habitat. He has worked with students to draw the route their drinking water takes, tour water department facilities and provide education materials.
    • Ted Kenney, Medway, Mass: Kenney is the deputy executive director and education manager of the New England Water Works. Under his leadership, the organization saw programs grow to 224 with students attendance at 5,300 last year, an 11 percent increase from the year before.
