EPA Sponsors Free Training on Energy Audits and Healthy Home Technologies for Contractors and Home Improvement Workers

PHILADELPHIA (November 16, 2011) - - Attention home improvement contractors and practitioners. “Health Opportunities in Energy Audits & Upgrades,” a free, one-day training course sponsored by EPA will be held on Friday, November 18 at the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources, in Charleston. The class is open to energy auditors, weatherization contractors, energy program managers, healthy homes practitioners, and other who work in the energy audit industry.

This course is taught by staff from the National Center for Healthy Housing, and is sponsored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in collaboration with the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources, U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Housing, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, and Southern Appalachian Labor School.

Healthy housing is receiving considerable attention from public health professionals and policy makers as a result of emerging scientific evidence that links health issues such as asthma, lead poisoning, and unintentional injuries to substandard housing. Attendees will learn strategies that merge healthy homes and energy efficiency work for a more combined home improvement approach. This “one-touch” method will better ensure that one repair does not leave behind a bigger problem unbeknownst to a contractor only trained in energy efficiency. In addition, this approach is more convenient for the home-owner or the tenant and is a more efficient use of public time and funds.

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources is located at 350 Capitol Street, in Charleston.
The class is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. in conference rooms B-10 and B-11.
