FOR RELEASE: FRIDAY, MARCH 6, 1998
KENTUCKY BARGE CLEANING COMPANY SENTENCED

On Feb. 24, River Road Terminal Inc. (RRT), of Louisville, Ky., was sentenced to pay a fine of $75,000, pay $75,000 restitution to the Kentucky Environmental Trust Fund (KETF) and serve two years probation by the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Kentucky in Louisville. RRT was convicted of violating the Clean Water Act by illegally discharging wastewater from its barge cleaning operation into the Ohio River without having a discharge permit. Various residues, including fertilizers, were illegally discharged into the river. High concentrations of fertilizers in rivers can contribute to changes in aquatic plant and fish communities, including fish kills and algae blooms. KETF will use the restitution monies to fund environmental research, education and restoration projects. The case was investigated by EPA’s Criminal Investigation Division, the FBI, the U.S. Coast Guard and the Kentucky Department for Environmental Protection.
